In the wake of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, every artist was doing their part to process and articulate the experience. Whether we were doing it as a kind of therapy or with some social or political purpose in mind, we were participating in building a new national consciousness about the world and our place in it. The Cataclysm and Tsunami series of paintings comprise my particular artistic response. Although the Tsunami series suggests a natural disaster, it may also be seen as a metaphor. The Cataclysm paintings are more direct, representing explosive helicopter attacks as cyclopean death masks. |
